Everyone has heard about the current issues facing the release of New York Cities Taxi of Tomorrow which are Nissan’s NV200 models. Honestly the legal battle over this transition for the city has flip flopped more times than most politicians during their campaign tours (pardon our political humor friends). Initially this plan was going to go off without a hitch, until a union debate sprung up stating that it would be illegal to force every cab driver in the city to purchase the same taxi car model . After several months in the court room, the city did indeed side with the driver’s unions and hit the metaphorical breaks on the transition to the taxi of tomorrow.
This last ruling was recently overturned and the change to the taxi fleet is set to continue. The ten year contract was initially wont by Nissan back in 2011 and is estimated to be worth about $1 billion. Currently, Nissan is selling the, the 2014 NV200,to New York City cab drivers for $29,700 which is a very reasonable price for the new model. Nissan North America had this to say about the ruling… “Nissan is pleased with the Court’s decision to uphold the Taxi of Tomorrow program. Given the specific NYC taxi research and development that Nissan conducted-including crash testing with the installed partition-we are confident that the Nissan NV200 taxi provides a solution that is optimal in safety, comfort and convenience for passengers and drivers alike.”
With the fascination of plug in hybrids, as well as every aspect of green driving, becoming a more and more important player in car buyers purchasing decisions; Nissan is rethinking some of their future strategies. The future of their vehicles may be lying in plug in versions of their current models by late 2015 or early 2016. Unfortunately, we have no clues on which vehicle or class the plug in hybrids will be but considering battery power is best for lighter cars so smaller sedans will most likely be the target.
With Nissan’s extremely high (and still climbing) Leaf sales, it’s not too much to say that with a new midsized sedan or crossover vehicle as a plug in hybrid will have equal sales records in only a few years. In fact, Nissan Leaf sales increased 46% from last year and even some of these incredible sales levels are enough to push Nissan towards more and more hybrid models. Which models would you like to see as a plug in hybrid model? We think a hybrid Maxima and Altima would be great additions to the Nissan fleet, as well as a Hybrid Rogue! Keep your eyes out for more information on new possible models![Top]
