Nissan Donation Supports Six Historically Black Colleges and Universities

College StudentsNissan has announced a donation of $250,000 to six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), expanding Nissan’s previous partnerships with HBCUs. The Nissan Donation funds will be used in support of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs at each of the following schools: Alcorn State University, Coahoma Community College, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Rust College and Tougaloo College.

“These six institutions have a rich history of continuously advancing their programs to enhance their student’s educational experience. This contribution continues Nissan’s commitment to HBCUs and to diversity, education and service in our community,” said, Jeffrey Webster, Director of Diversity and Inclusion in a statement.

Together with Nissan executives, U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson will present representatives from each school with resources for promoting STEM initiatives, with the intention of inspiring and supporting up-and-coming talent.

“I am very proud of the work our HBCUs are doing to develop the scientists, engineers and innovators of tomorrow,” said U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson. “As one of the largest manufacturers in our state, Nissan understands the need to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s opportunities. I applaud their demonstrated commitment to our community and look forward to their continued support in the future.”

Here at 171 Nissan, we are proud to support a program that provides opportunities for this country’s future engineers and thought-leaders.

800 Students Opt Out of Common Core Testing

Nearly 800 students plan to skip a round of Common Core Testing in the Lake Charles area and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them. Students have the option to opt out of the tests. In all 318 elementary and 458 middle school students will not be taking part.

BooksThe problem comes down to school performance scores and, by extension, funding. The total number of students opting out comes to 6% of the total students scheduled to be tested. When a student opts out of the common core testing, it counts as a zero for the school. In turn, this could affect the No Child Left Behind funding. Representative Brett Geymann is leading the battle against Common Core standards.

This isn’t the first set of reforms the area has seen recently. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved a $36 million increase in state aid for public schools. The funding also sets new rules for how public school teachers are evaluated with less emphasis on student performance.

The Lake Charles students represent only 0.2% of test takers and only two schools. State Superintendent of Education John White said, “We don’t just govern two schools. We govern 1,400 schools.” Whether any changes will be made to Common Core Testing remains to be seen.

New Nissan Sway Concept Rings in the Future at Geneva Motor Show

This year, Nissan is easily the talk of the Geneva Motor Show, thanks to a beautiful new European hatchback concept design. The new Nissan Sway Concept, in fact, is more than just a very, very cool new subcompact hatchback (although it is that); it’s also a huge, exciting look into the future of Nissan small car design. Therefore, while we probably won’t see the Sway in production anytime soon—especially not in America—we can still expect to see its influence spread across the Nissan lineup soon.

The Sway concept has a very gracefully sloping front end design—in fact, the slope starts almost halfway down the vehicle and glides all the way to the trapezoidal front grille. The new Sway concept is garnering comparisons to the iDX concept, but we’re more excited about this one—even if it currently doesn’t really have an engine.

On the interior side, the Sway sports special concept features like uniquely designed front seats, a sporty steering wheel, and more interior room than you might expect. It’s also got the “V-Motion grille,” boomerang headlamps, the “deformed X-structure” of the roof, and even orange accents for extra style points. Check out the Sway online, and then come see us at 171 Nissan to learn more about Nissan small cars of the present and future today.
