Back to School Driving: Staying Safe this Fall

back-to-school driving

Whether you are a teen, parent, or college student, back to school driving is always hectic. That’s why it’s important to keep in mind some of the following tips for safety, helping you to stay aware of pedestrians, buses, and other cars on the road.

The following tips are designed to reduce accidents and injuries that frequently occur in the back-to-school season, as recommended by Warren County, New York and the National Safety Council.

Slow down. Though you may have gotten used to zooming down the road during the summer, now that school is in session, you’ll need to slow down your speed. The speed limit in school zones is typically set at between 15 and 25 mph, with significant traffic fines if you choose to speed. Have patience, never roll through stop signs, check for kids at crosswalks, and always stay alert.

Eliminate distractions. Teens and college students are particularly notorious for texting and driving, though parents often do it too. It’s important to put down the phone when you’re behind the wheel. Texting is illegal for all drivers in Louisiana; however, calling or accessing social media while in a school zone is also against the law.

Finally, watch for bicycles. Many students rely on bikes to get to school, adding another obstacle for drivers. Always look twice when making a turn to be sure you didn’t miss a bicyclist, and never drive or park in a bike lane. Bike riders over 10 years of age are legally required to use the road, so be sure to have patience. Always give at least three feet of space when passing a bike.

Cutting Through the Air: The Nissan BladeGlider Concept

On the open roads outside of Rio de Janeiro, a quiet flash could be seen zooming down the highway over the past few months. The Nissan BladeGlider Concept, an all-electric high-performance vehicle, demonstrates the potential of green technologies in the auto industry. With lightweight engineering that generates zero emissions, this battery-powered model can do 0 to 62 mph (or 0 to 100kph) in less than 5.0 seconds.

The BladeGlider is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. With a narrow design that cuts through the air, the model can hold up to three passengers. According to Nissan, the model also has dihedral doors that swing up to provide a dramatic entry, as well as a reinforced roll cage and open roof to make it feel like a Formula racecar.

“These prototypes epitomize Nissan’s drive to expand its Intelligent Mobility strategy, where driving pleasure combines with environmental responsibility,” said Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan. He further explains that “Nissan believes that enthusiasts should look forward to a zero emission future and Nissan BladeGlider is a perfect demonstration of that. It’s the electric vehicle for car lovers.”

The BladeGlider has a maximum speed of 118 mph, driven by two 130-kW electric motors. Plus, it has 268 horsepower and an agile design that can turn on a dime. One glance at this innovative prototype will make you fall in love.
